What Is Letters to Language™?

Letters to Language™ (LtL) is a comprehensive literacy learning system that brings guided online instruction and hands-on learning together. Through a joyful, self-paced, story-based approach, Making Sense of the Alphabet™ combines engaging animated lessons with specially designed companion books, hands-on activities, and reinforcement materials—all working together to help children discover how written language works in ways that are meaningful, memorable, and fun.

What makes the Letters to Language™ Literacy Foundation so Essential?

The strong literacy foundation that Letters to Language™ exclusively provides gives children simple, clear, and imaginative understandings for why letters look and sound the way they do, the relationships between uppercase and lowercase letters, directionality, vowel concepts, decoding, and many other essential understandings—all as the letters of the alphabet come to life!

Students join the charmingly bizarre Letters to Language™ alphabet creatures in their wonderful imaginative world through engaging stories and animation. To deepen each learning experience, rhythm, role-playing, coloring, drawing, signing, Morse code, companion books, and many other meaningful activities are woven throughout the program.

The result is a joyful, meaningful, memorable, interconnected, multi-sensory learning system intentionally designed to strengthen understanding, activate long-term memory, and support lasting learning.

Letters to Language™ is far more than an alphabet program. It is a carefully integrated literacy learning system in which every story, activity, book, lesson, and reading experience works together to build the essential understandings that make reading, writing, and spelling meaningful.

Who is this program Designed for?

Ages 4–7

Children preparing for kindergarten or first grade

Children who would benefit from a fresh literacy start

The Program Teaches. Parents Encourage.

The teaching is done through the program's lessons.  Students simply watch, listen, interact with the animated video lessons, and participate in the accompanying hands-on activities and companion books. To help ensure an optimal learning experience, Letters to Language™ has also been designed so that parents and instructors can provide positive in-person interaction, encouragement, and reinforcement along the way. No special training or educational background is needed. Helpful information throughout the website and Parent/Instructor Manual provides simple guidance for supporting each child's learning journey.

Adults simply share the experience by creating a positive learning environment, encouraging attention, celebrating discoveries, and enjoying the journey alongside the child.

The Parent/Instructor Manual includes companion pages that correspond with each review section, along with simple yet powerful Power Prompts™ that guide children toward discovering answers for themselves. Rather than supplying answers or encouraging guessing, these thoughtfully designed prompts strengthen understanding, confidence, and independent thinking.

Together, the online lessons, companion books, reinforcement materials, and Power Prompts™ create an enjoyable learning experience for both children and the adults supporting them.

Learning That Builds Success

Every lesson, activity, story, and reading experience follows a carefully created, sequential learning path.

Each new understanding builds upon the ones previously taught, allowing children to experience continual success as they grow.

For example, once children have learned the sounds the letters Aa, Bb, and Cc make, they have everything they need to learn how to decode the word cab.

Aa‍ ‍Bb ‍ ‍Cc

cab

Then, after learning the sound of the letter Dd, they are ready to apply that new understanding in decoding the word bad.

Aa Bb Cc Dd

bad

Every word children encounter in Letters to Language™ matches where they are in the learning sequence.

In this way, learning becomes an exciting journey of knowing.

As understanding increases... ability naturally follows.

LtL BRIEF OVERVIEW

Time: 3:32

Could there be another Explanation?

When students...

  • reverse or flip letters,

  • struggle with directionality (reading or writing backwards),

  • confuse letter names with their sounds,

  • struggle to connect uppercase and lowercase letters, or

  • can't remember the sounds the letters make,

these behaviors are often viewed as signs of a learning disability or disorder.

However, they may also simply be signs that some of the essential foundations of literacy have never been clearly identified, understood, and taught.

Letters to Language™ addresses each of these essential understandings by providing simple, clear, and imaginative reasons that make sense of the alphabet.

As understanding increases... ability naturally follows.

What Will My Child Gain?

Through this joyful learning adventure, children discover that learning is fun!

Children develop clear understandings of:

  • why letters look the way they do,

  • why they make the sounds they make,

  • how speech sounds are formed,

  • the relationships between uppercase and lowercase letters,

  • directionality,

  • letter names, sounds, and symbols,

  • handwriting formation,

  • vowel concepts,

  • decoding,

  • and how reading, writing, and spelling all work together as one meaningful system.

As each new understanding becomes part of their growing foundation, another piece of the literacy puzzle falls into place.

Children begin seeing written language as a fascinating puzzle filled with meaningful patterns waiting to be discovered. Understanding grows. Confidence grows. The joy of learning grows.

And perhaps the greatest gift of all...

Children discover that their imagination is one of the most powerful tools they possess for learning.

Meet your Instructor

LaVerne McGrath

My father once blessed me with words that have stayed with me ever since:

“Verne, you don't just teach children how to read; you teach people how to learn.”

From that day forward, I made it my goal to live in a way that would make those words true.

Letters to Language™ grew from that journey—from years of teaching, learning, observing, creating, and discovering ways to help children understand the why behind what they are learning.

It is my sincere hope that Letters to Language™ will help your student discover greater reading ability, along with the confidence and joy that come when learning begins to make sense.

I am honored that you are here and delighted to share this very special part of my life's work with you and your student.

With Gratitude,
LaVerne McGrath

Founder of McGrath Method™, Creator of Letters to Language™ and Bird Beak Pinch™, and Developer of Think about Thinking™.

A Personal Note from LaVerne

For many years, I have taught, developed, tested, refined, and dreamed of bringing these materials to life in a way that could reach more children. Through Letters to Language™, that dream has become a reality.

My educational journey included studies in Fine Arts, Psychology, Communications, Education, and graduate work in the Psychology of Education. Along the way, I worked as a classroom teacher, tutor, curriculum developer, instructional designer, corporate trainer, and co-owner of tutoring centers. Each experience deepened my understanding of how children learn.

Yet some of my greatest lessons came from the students, parents, instructors, and families I had the privilege of working with throughout the years. They taught me to look beyond what a child was struggling to do and ask:

What could be added to bring better understanding?

That question has guided much of my life's work.
